Grotto Rose

In the Solomon Islands, in the middle of a mangrove marsh, there is an unusual underwater grotto. Roughly 15 feet in diameter, the tunnel extends down about 120 feet before bending sideways horizontally. After another hundred feet through solid rock, it exits out on the face of an underwater cliff, to the open sea.

On this day, the water in the mangrove marsh was so clear and calm that the clouds could be seen in the sky above the surface. Soft coral colonies, such as the one in this photo, decorated the rim of the grotto like brilliant bouquets of flowers.
