Orange Soft Coral and Crinoid

There are two types of animals in this photograph. The crinoid looks like a collection of curly black feathers. These animals feed by filtering plankton with their feathery arms.

The second animal in this photo is a colony of soft coral, on which the crinoid is perched. Each one of the tiny flower-like shapes is the individual animal of coral. The orange spike-like shapes in the stalk are called spicules.
